The stretch of Nile between Aswan and Luxor is usually treated as something to pass through. Most travellers see Kom Ombo, Edfu and Esna from the deck of a cruise boat — half a morning each, a pause between the two great cities. But these three temples are not a gap in the story. They are its final chapter, and, strangely, its clearest one.

All three were built late, in the Greco-Roman centuries, when Egypt was no longer ruled by Egyptians. Greek and Roman kings raised them in the old style, carved themselves into the walls in pharaonic dress, and made offerings to gods who were already thousands of years ancient. And because they are the youngest temples in Egypt, they are the best preserved: roofs still on, colour still in the ceilings, walls still crowded with text. Everything you strain to imagine at Karnak, you simply stand inside here.

The day works its way downriver through that late world. The Temple of Kom Ombo, high on its bend of the river, built twice over for two gods at once. The Temple of Horus at Edfu, the most complete temple standing anywhere in Egypt. And the Temple of Khnum at Esna, sunk deep below a working market town, its ceiling still blazing with colour. The road ends in Luxor, where the valley opens green and the great East Bank temples begin to glow.

We run this route from south to north on purpose. The cruise boats and the Luxor day-groups reach Esna and Edfu mid-morning; starting from Aswan puts you inside Kom Ombo before the boats have docked, and brings you to Edfu and Esna in the quiet of the afternoon, after the crowds have moved on. Same three temples, more room to breathe at each one.
